Supreme Court Strikes Down Louisiana's Majority-Black District as Racial GerryMander

APNews.com:

The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down Louisiana’s second majority Black congressional district in a decision that could open the door for Republican-led states to eliminate Black and Latino electoral districts that tend to favor Democrats and affect the balance of power in Congress.

In a 6-3 ruling, the court’s conservative majority found that the district, represented by Democrat Cleo Fields, relied too heavily on race. Chief Justice John Roberts had described the district as a “snake” that stretches more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) to link parts of the Shreveport, Alexandria, Lafayette and Baton Rouge areas.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the National Action Network, called the decision a “bullet in the heart of the voting rights movement.”

Liberal media outlets, Democrats and the usual professional race-baiters (like Al Sharpton) on the Left will argue that this ruling by SCOTUS 'weakens' the Voters Rights Act, but what it actually does is make it more strict. Indeed, Justice Alito’s interpretation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act raises the standard for justifying race-based redistricting. Alito argues that such measures are only constitutional if they directly remedy intentional discrimination, not simply to enhance minority representation. To the Left's severe disappointment, this shifts the burden onto proponents to prove minorities lacked meaningful participation in prior redistricting—something increasingly difficult given modern political realities. With significant minority representation now common in state legislatures, Alito contends that the original need for race-based remedies has largely faded. As a result, Section 2 remains valid, but is limited to rare, extreme cases. His reasoning parallels the Court’s approach to affirmative action, emphasizing that eliminating racial discrimination requires ending race-based decision-making altogether.
