Suspect in Charlotte, NC, Train Stabbing of Iryna Zarutska Indicted on Federal Charges, Death Penalty Possible

NYPost.com:

The career criminal charged with fatally stabbing Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska on the Charlotte light rail system was indicted Wednesday on federal charges that could land him the death penalty, according to reports.

Accused killer Decarlos Brown Jr., 31, has been charged with violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death after a federal grand jury in North Carolina returned an indictment against him, ABC News reported.

The charges make him eligible for the death penalty. Brown was allegedly caught in a harrowing video surveillance stabbing Zarutska, 23, to death on Aug. 22 on the Lynx Blue Line light rail in Charlotte.

Too bad for this career criminal that committing murder on mass transit, regardless of whether the system stays within state lines, is a federal crime. Still, the criminal justice system shares some of the blame for allowing this lifelong felon to remain on the streets in the first place. That said, I don’t personally support the death penalty, but I also won’t lose a wink of sleep if Brown ends up on death row.

North Carolina Democrat Gov. Josh Stein Signs 'Iryna's Law' Into Law to End Cashless Bail

Yahoo.com:

Governor Josh Stein announced the signing of a crime bill the week after a mass shooting claimed three lives in Southport.

Stein signed House Bill 307 into law on Oct. 3, the governor announced in a video statement. Stein said the need for the legislation, known as Iryna's Law, is exemplified by the stabbing of Iryna Zarutska in Charlotte and a mass shooting in Southport.

The law contains a number of provisions around criminal justice, including changes to death penalty proceedings and procedures for defendants with previous criminal histories. It includes stricter guidelines for defendants with previous violent offenses, new procedures for defendants with suspected mental health issues and the elimination of cashless bail.

Because Democrats are horrible when it comes to handling crime, Stein waited till the last minute (two weeks) to sign the damn bill. An bvious measure that also closes loopholes that allowed violent criminals back on the streets.
