Former CNN anchor Don Lemon has been arrested by federal agents in connection to his presence at a Minnesota church protest, according to his lawyer.
Lemon’s lawyer said the former CNN host was detained in Los Angeles on Thursday night.
“Don Lemon was taken into custody by federal agents last night in Los Angeles, where he was covering the Grammy awards,” Abbe Lowell announced. “Don has been a journalist for 30 years, and his constitutionally protected work in Minneapolis was no different than what he has always done.”
It’s funny to watch the tribal reactions and selective “outrage” surrounding Don Lemon’s arrest, with people reflexively defending their political side. Partisanship aside, there’s a clear argument for why the arrest was justified. Lemon didn’t enter that church as a neutral journalist, he went as an activist, a prominent figure aligned with the anti-Trump movement that dominates much of the mainstream media, BlueSky, and blue-state politics. Indeed, since leaving CNN Lemon (like former a-hole colleague Jim Acosta) has leaned heavily into the Never Trump brand, frequently criticizing Trump, the GOP, and conservatives at every turn. And while he has every right to express those views, that’s different from participating in direct action and/or mob activity. According to the charges, Lemon was with agitators who were preparing to confront a church based on a rumor about one of its pastors, conduct that falls under the FACE Act, a federal felony. Authorities allege the group occupied the church, harassed parishioners, blocked exits, and refused to leave when asked, interfering with people’s right to worship. The indictment also claims Lemon obstructed the front entrance while questioning attendees about immigration policy and that his team had audio from inside beforehand, suggesting coordination. Taken together, the situation presents serious legal trouble for him.
